RYA Stage 1 Course

2 Day Course

Designed as a follow-up to introductory sessions, aimed at Scouts and Explorers. This course provides both practical and classroom tuition. Teaching is carried out in a variety of boats, with instructors seldom in the boats after the first day or so.  The boats used are generally single handed craft, either Toppers or Picos.

Participants attending both days may aim to attain RYA Stage 1 certificate.

RYA Stage 2 Course

2 Day Course

Designed as a follow-up to RYA Stage 1, aimed at Scouts and Explorers.  This course builds up the basic skills, both practical and shore-based.  It includes practical capsize practice.  The boats used are generally single handed craft, either Toppers or Picos.

Participants attending both days may aim to attain RYA Stage 2 certificate.

RYA Stage 3 Course

4 Day Course

This course is intended for Scouts/Explorers who have previously attained RYA Stages 1 and 2. Teaching will be a combination of shore-based course work and practical sailing, principally in Toppers or Picos.  The content of the course is quite high and everyone should attend all sessions.  The class size is limited in number, so much individual tuition is possible

RYA Stage 4 Course

 2 Day Course

This course is an introduction to handling double-handed dinghies.  It is aimed at Scouts and Explorers who have attained RYA Stage 3 or have equivalent experience.  Participants will be encouraged to act as both helm and as crew, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication.  The course will be carried out at Chew Valley Lake.  The craft used will be Laser Bahia, Kestrel and Wayfarer.

RYA Levels 1, 2 and beyond (Adult)

2 Day Course for each Level

Levels 1 & 2 are Beginners and Improvers courses for Adult Helpers.  An RYA qualification will be awarded dependent upon ability.  Level 2 qualification is suitable for Leaders to enable them to helm a scout boat.  Other adults/parents who would be prepared to join our rota to assist the summer introductory sessions would be welcome.  Further training would be given for this and would be by mutual arrangement.  Contact Peter Murray for guidance on course suitability.
